Bio:Well, I looked at my userinfo and decided it was time for an update. So, here goes.

My name is Alex. I just finished university for the final time (maybe). I graduated from the University of Waterloo; I have a major in English (Rhetoric and Professional Writing) and minor in Psychology, which translates into "I want to be a writer and will actually be a secretary for most of my life." I then took an extra year to be in Humber's Television Writing & Producing program, which was hilarious and I'm going to miss it.

I don't actually like to think about politics or religion (blood pressure!), but I believe they're important (so I still do so). I'm Canadian. I don't mind higher taxes in favor of better education and health care. I'm the daughter of a small business owner and an elementary school principal, so I've heard both sides of the Conservative/Liberal debate.

I agree with the tenets of feminism, but not with the way some people choose to support them; I prefer to call myself an egalitarian, because I think feminism connotes the idea that it is purely a venture for women, rather than something that should (and does) aid many different groups. I don't think that the sex trade or pornography is inherently damaging to women; I think that it may be used that way sometimes. In fact, I don't think sexism is inherent to most things; if it were, it would be useless trying to fight it.

I'm bisexual and I support gay rights; I've marched in one Toronto Pride Parade, and would like to do it again. I cheered when Canada finally passed the same-sex marriage bill. I'm angry that Stephen Harper pushed to take it to a vote again. I think that studies about how sexuality works, both biologically and socially, are necessary. However, I also acknowledge that no matter what the results, people will use them both for and against us. It's the nature of people.

I'm an atheist. I don't support Pascal's Wager, and I don't think most thinking people would, either. (If God does exist, then believing in Him because you're afraid of what happens if you don't and he does exist probably won't fly.) I also tend not to believe in the supernatural, but my mother sometimes scares me. That said, I have nothing against faith; I just don't have any, at least not in a higher power.

My philosophical beliefs are a little more difficult to explain, but I tend to believe that empiricism is correct, that mysteries are problems that haven't been solved yet, that knowledge is not innate, and that there is an objective reality outside of our subjective perceptions (and that one day, we may be able to see reality for what it is). I believe that existentialism is the best way to live a good life. I'm a "soft" ethical relativist; I believe that there are some moral truths that are innate, and others that are culturally determined. Determinism doesn't work, in my mind. I'm not sure where I fall on the possibility of true AI.

I like books, and I try to read often. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. I always read the new Tanya Huff, Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman books. I also read Harry Potter. Anything else is gravy. I tend to prefer sf and fantasy. I absolutely loathe Margaret Atwood, and wish that she wasn't the name everyone thinks of when they hear "Canadian author". She doesn't speak to my experience as a Canadian woman, neither with her children characters nor with her adult ones. Robertson Davies was better. Shakespeare has my eternal love, but someone should tell educators that we don't need to read Chaucer in Middle English without translation. (;P)

The only TV shows I watch with any frequency on TV are The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Heroes; however, Firefly has captured my attention and my love, as has The Colbert Report. I also enjoy anime and some American cartoons. Among the anime I enjoy are Shoujo Kakumei Utena and WeiB Kreuz (what can I say? They're hot).

I used to be into fandom; not so much, any more. I still have my favorite pairings, but I don't read much fanfic, nor do I write it (much). I do, however, write original-world fic based on roleplaying games.

I love roleplaying. I currently play in a nWoD Mortals game, and there's talk of a 4th ed silly D&D game. I run a Dragon-Blooded 2e game. I also still obsess over an Aberrant game that ended years ago, because it was that good, and a Vampire: the Requiem tabletop game, ditto. I have a wiki for most of my games at kwgames.pbwiki.com.

I want to write, but in the paraphrased words of Terry Pratchett: "Too many people want to have written." I am going to work hard at not being one of those people - because, frankly, I don't want to be a secretary.

And now, I leave you with a Jon Stewart quote:

"So how do you know what is the right path to choose to get the result that you desire? And the honest answer is this. You won’t. And accepting that greatly eases the anxiety of your life experience."
